electrolysis explanationDuring treatment, a sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of the follicle alongside the hair. There is no sensation when entering the follicle. Once the probe is in place, a measured amount of electrical energy is sent into the lower 2/3rds of the follicle to destroy the hair germinative cells and the dermal papilla, or blood supply that produce the follicle and nurture the growth of the hair. This happens beneath the surface of the skin, producing a slight reddening on the surface, which is temporary. The client may feel a warming sensation while the current is applied. After the current is applied, the hair is removed and should easily glide out of the follicle.

Permanent results are best achieved by adhering to a consistent program of treatments, continuous over a period of time. The reason for this has to do with the growth cycle of the follicle.

Each follicle goes through an Active Growth Phase or Anagen Phase, when the hair is just emerging on the surface of the skin, a Transitional Phase or Catagen Phase, when the hair detaches from the dermal papilla and migrates up the follicle, and the Resting Stage or Telogen Stage, when the hair sheds from the body.

The most effective and thorough treatment of a follicle is during the active phase when the follicle lining is moist and reactive to treatment, and the dermal papilla, which nourishes the hair, is attached. During the transitional phase, the follicle is dryer and less reactive, meaning that the treatment may be less thorough, and the follicle may need to be treated again during its active phase. During the resting stage, no treatment is applied because the hair is absent.

There are many follicles in the skin in different stages of the growth cycle, and with consistent treatment over time, we can treat each follicle permanently. As the client, you will notice a gradual thinning over time until the area is free of hair.
